A few nights ago I went to Walmart to grab some make-up to cover up my pimple. As I was scanning the seemingly endless options, I overheard a conversation between a mother and her daughter that went something like this...
Daughter: Can we go home? Mom: Yes, as soon as I find the right shade of make-up Daughter: Why do you need make-up? Mom: Because we need pretty things to make us pretty. Clothes, shoes, and makeup, those things make us pretty. WHAT? "WE NEED PRETTY THINGS TO MAKE US PRETTY?" I was so mad and sad when I heard this I didn't even buy the make-up, I just left. I am so tired of hearing women say "I usually don't look like this" when they're not wearing make-up. I am so sick of women thinking they aren't beautiful without make-up and trendy clothes. I know too many women who won't step outside their house without make-up. I know too many women that are unrecognizable without make-up. I HATE THIS. Why are there HOURS spent on pampering our appearance? Make-up doesn't make you beautiful. 1 Peter 3:3-4 says, "your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." Braiding your hair isn't bad, makeup isn't bad. The objects are amoral. But HOW they're used demonstrates our intentions and heart. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, "but the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." There is nothing wrong with wanting to look beautiful. The world tends to focus on what people look like. But, beauty doesn't come from our appearance it comes from our heart. God focuses on our hearts. If God doesn't focus on our appearance, why are we? How much time do you spend doing your make-up, picking out an outfit, doing your hair, finding the perfect lipgloss, perfect body, and focusing on maintaining that image? COMPARED TO How much time do you spend seeking and loving Jesus? Man, it's hard. I am just as guilty as the next women. I am thankful that my father doesn't say to me "you need makeup and nice clothes to be pretty." Instead He says, "I have made you the way I want you, set apart from others. I love you, and know every detail about you, I even have all the hairs on your head number. You are worth more than jewels. I am an artist, and you are my masterpiece. So, make-up wearer- why are you wearing make-up? Really ask yourself this, Nervous what people might think? Guys won't think your hot? Everyone wears make-up? Again, wearing make-up isn't bad, Having nice clothes isn't bad. But glorifying our appearance more than Jesus IS BAD, IS IDOLATRY, AND IS SIN. So to the woman in Walmart who thinks pretty things make you pretty,.. glitter is really pretty...am I prettier now? #prettythingsdontmakeyoupretty
